How to Host a Frugal Graduation Party

Graduation

Graduation time is right around the corner, and after years of hard work it’s time to celebrate with your special graduate! If you are hosting a graduation party you’re aware of how quickly celebration costs can rise. However, it’s possible to host a fun graduation party without breaking the bank. Here are a few ideas to keep your graduation party costs down.

Location

Rather than hosting a celebration at a restaurant, consider having the party at your home. If your own home isn’t a good spot for a party ask friends or family that have a larger home or backyard. If you need to have your party off-site look into renting a park with a pavilion and barbeque grills or ask a local church if they rent space. Often time churches have extremely reasonable rental rates.

Decorations

Ditch traditional decorations and instead display school photos from over the years along with art and other school projects. In addition to paying homage to the graduate, the old pictures will strike up many conversations among the guests. If traditional graduation party decorations are a must for you, check out dollar and discounts stores as they often have a variety of inexpensive decorations.

Food and Drink

Catering food can be expensive, and it’s just as easy to make your own food. Additionally you could ask friends and relatives to bring a dish. To keep the meal simple choose a few main dishes. Baked pastas are easy to make and when added with a salad and bread, provide a wonderful meal. Alternately you could assemble a platter of deli meat with rolls for sandwiches. If it’s nice out a barbeque serving hot dogs and hamburgers is an easy and affordable option.

As for beverages you don’t need to buy individual bottles of soft drinks and water. Instead make pitchers of water with lemon, iced tea, lemonade, or punch. Serve coffee in carafes and have hot water available for tea. If you decide to offer alcoholic beverages stick to a few bottles of wine and one of two kinds of beer.

Cake

Don’t splurge on an expensive custom graduation cake. After all, not everyone even eats cake! You could always bake one yourself, but I understand if you’re not comfortable baking a cake for a large group. A great alternate option is ordering a sheet cake from a grocery store. The giant sheet cakes at Costco run less than $20 and can feed up to 50 people.

As with any party you host, the key to success is keeping it simple. Years from now your guests will remember the great time they had, and your graduate will be thankful for the party thrown in their honor.
